Barnsley
BARNSLEY HAS LONG BEEN CELEBRATED FOR ITS ACCESSIBILITY. AS THE GATEWAY TO THE PENNINES, IT OFFERS SOME STUNNING VENUES, DAZZLING SCENERY AND A FASCINATING INDUSTRIAL HISTORY. TODAY IT’S BUSTLING WITH EXCITING NEW DEVELOPMENTS. KERRIE HUDSON OF CONFERENCE YORKSHIRE SOUTH INTRODUCES ONE OF THE REGION’S BURGEONING
SUCCESSES.
“Barnsley’s revealing itself as a real gem. With a brilliant location, just minutes
from the motorway, there’s lots of really exciting development underway, following
the start of a £370million investment programme. As well as the old favourites
- the grand old country houses and estates - there are lots of new venues, like
the fantastic new Digital Media Centre. Now Barnsley’s proving really strong
competition for some of its bigger neighbours.”VENUES
Barnsley’s hoteliers are making the most of some wonderful country estates and
many of the town’s venues were once grand manor houses, or opulent rural residences.
Take Tankersley Manor, a 17th century manor house built from mellow yellow Yorkshire
stone, it also houses state of the art facilities for 400 delegates and accommodation
for up to 100.
A new acquisition for the Q Hotel chain, its recent refurbishment makes it a
fantastic choice for event organisers. Brooklands Hotel, Yorkshire Tourist Board’s
Best Hotel of the Year 2005, is a thoroughly modern, elegant venue, complete with
conference space for around 400 delegates and lots of team building activities
on offer. Ardsley House Hotel, an 18th century country home accommodating up to 300 delegates is situated half way
along the Trans Pennine trail, ideal for any delegates who want to enjoy exploring
and come back to spa treatments galore to ease away the aches and pains.
RELAXING AND SOCIALISING
No trip to Barnsley is complete without sampling the famous Barnsley Chop, a
challenge for even the most enthusiastic of appetites! If you conquer the chop
you’ll need plenty of exercise the next day, but that’s easy here - you’ll find
glorious walking along the high, wind-swept moors of the stunning Pennine Way
and organised team activities like horse trekking, rock climbing, or one of the
area’s most popular activities, bird-watching, at the nearby RSPB Wetlands Centre.
Anyone who enjoys nightlife more than wildlife will be pleased to hear that Barnsley
is famous for its bars and clubs too, with more than its fair share of places
to eat, drink, be merry, and if you can manage, dance till dawn! Barnsley is home
to the Academy Theatre too, which you could precede with a trip to Lucorum - a
great spot combining restaurant, bars and shops.
NEW DEVELOPMENTSThe recently opened Digital Media Centre is Barnsley’s most contemporary conference
venue and includes a selection of meeting and workrooms, complete with all the
state of the art equipment you could ever want.
SOMETHING DIFFERENT
Cannon Hall Park, Gardens and Museum - a stunning stately home set in 70 acres of magical gardens and from where you
can start a series of orienteering trails, or go fishing!
Explore the monument trail and secret gardens at Wentworth Castle, an outstanding 18th century, Grade 1 listed garden that’s soon due to complete
an ambitious restoration programme.
