Sheffield

SHEFFIELD IS NOT JUST ENGLAND’S FOURTH CITY, IT’S OUR GREENEST CITY TOO.  ENJOYING A RENAISSANCE AT THE FOREFRONT OF THE CREATIVE AND DIGITAL INDUSTRIES, IT OFFERS A IMPRESSIVE PORTFOLIO OF ATTRACTIONS AND VENUES.

Kerrie Hudson of Conference Yorkshire South talks to us about the Steel City.

“Events like World Snooker and the International Documentary Festival demonstrate the calibre of world class events the city is hosting. This year we also welcomed the International Indian Film Academy Awards and UK Corporate Games. There’s excellent variety in Sheffield, from hi-tech to palatial, and there’s a real buzz in the city as it reaps the rewards of recent investment. And it’s so accessible by road, rail and air, it’s hard to beat”

VENUES

Thanks to Sheffield’s recent history in hosting events, purpose-built space abounds. The colossal Don Valley Stadium and Ponds Forge both accommodate large numbers with plenty of breakout space, and opportunities for team building using their fantastic sporting facilities. Hallam FM arena is the largest venue in Yorkshire for glittering banquets.

The largest city centre venue is Sheffield City Hall with a range of spaces for up to 2200 delegates. Benefiting from a recent £12.5 million investment, its central location just a few minutes walk from the railway station and no more than 10 minutes walk from more than 1000 hotel rooms make it the ideal choice for conventions in the heart of the city.  The wonderful, arched Winter Garden is more unusual - here you can host your reception surrounded by lush vegetation! Cutlers’ Hall harks back to the city’s grand old days leading the cutlery industry and remains a stunning venue for dinners, receptions and entertaining.

RELAXING AND SOCIALISING

Sheffield is great for entertaining guests, especially sports fans! Hardly a week goes by without an event in Sheffield. The World Snooker is a real pull, as are the regular matches involving Sheffield Football Club - having just celebrated its 150th anniversary it’s the oldest club in the world!

The Crucible and Lyceum Theatres are renowned nationwide and play host to an eclectic programme of performances, or treat your delegates or VIPs to a classical concert at the opulent City Hall. The Millennium Galleries regularly house visiting V&A and Tate exhibitions and looks forward to welcoming Vivienne Westwood. Shopaholics can lose themselves for hours at Meadowhall, just out of town and home to 270 stores.  Less than five miles away the dramatic Peak National Park offers a wealth of opportunities for outdoor and team building activities. More sedate activities, like a tour of beautiful Chatsworth House, an elegant stately home with breathtaking gardens will really give delegates something special to remember.

NEW DEVELOPMENTS

The city’s first boutique hotel - The Leopold- is now open transforming Leopold Square: The University of Sheffield’s The Edge conference facility is a £160 million project including 3500 bedrooms on one site: Aston Hotel Sheffield Rotherham is the next hotel opening just off the M1, closely followed by Jurys in the city centre: Sheffield Hallam University’s facilities will benefit from £100 million in upgrades in the next 5 years.

SOMETHING DIFFERENT

Cutlers’ Hall, dating back to 1862, was home to the Cutlers’ company of Sheffield and the world renowned ‘Made in Sheffield’ mark - today it makes a wonderful setting for banquets.
